Any kind of milestone in business is something to be celebrated, just having the gusto to start a business in the first place is something worth commending, especially in the trying economic times that we live in today. So, making it to 50 years in business, well that deserves a party. And that’s just what PTD Metalworking Professionals did recently.
On the 18th of October 2024, PTD Metalworking Professionals, formally known as Perfection Tool and Die, took the opportunity to down tools and celebrate their 50th anniversary at their premises in Anderbolt, Boksburg in style. Over and above the attendance of their roughly 100 employees were the original owners Norbert Bohn and Raul Dos Santos.

The company was founded by Norbert Bohn in 1974, initially focusing on tool and die manufacturing. However, with the advent of CNC machines, the company soon shifted its approach towards high-volume component production for a number of industries.
In the 1980s, Raul Dos Santos joined Norbert after emigrating to South Africa from Portugal, having qualified as a fitter and turner. He was brought on specifically to operate the CNC machines due to his programming experience. Before long, he was offered a partnership, marking the modest beginnings of what has since evolved into a highly successful business now sporting roughly 80 CNC machines.
Takes delivery of new fleet
To stay ahead of the game, PTD are continuously improving their processes and making adjustments to their shop floor. Amongst the fleet of CNC’s are a number of new additions. These include six DN Solutions DT2100B’s and one DN Solutions Lynx 2100LSYB, supplied by Puma Machine Tools, and a Dongbu 200MSY supplied by Spectrum Machine Tools. The Dongbu is to be equipped with a robot and locally designed and manufactured conveyor system – a machining cell and concept that PTD have designed in combination with Spectrum Machine Tools.

They have also taken delivery of a Dongbu 200MSY supplied by Spectrum Machine Tools
PTD are also an official Kennametal Certified Channel Partner. Since the 1980s, PTD Metalworking Professionals has maintained a strong partnership with Kennametal, serving as both a supplier of the soft rock mining consumables they manufacture and as a client for their own tooling purchases. PTD are now one of only two of these certified partners in South Africa.

Earlier this year, Norbert’s grandson, Jessé Bohn, who joined the company 12 years ago and is also a Director, told this publication: “The one thing you can’t get back in this environment is time, that’s why it is so important to have the machining capacity that we do.” We are sure he’d add to that quote now by including something along the lines of: “Success in business is built on consistency and trust over time.”
