After building its history and reputation on a solid base of manufacture and distribution of hack saws, band saws, bow saws, butcher saws and various hand tools, First Cut (Pty) Ltd has evolved into a company that now offers a total solution and focused range of products designed around providing cutting solutions for various industries – the most important being steel, timber, meat, foam, textiles and the DIY trade.
The history of First Cut in South Africa dates back to 1956, with the formation of Acme Leton Tool Company, a small saw doctor activity in Cape Town. The initial business consisted of manufacturing cutting blades for the clothing and food processing industries and shortly thereafter wood-cutting bandsaws were incorporated into the range. The development of a special hardening process in 1960 resulted in the first metal-cutting bandsaw being produced, followed closely by the induction hardened high speed steel hacksaw blade.
In 1973, Neil Tools (U.K.) acquired complete control of the company, and production of the Eclipse range of hacksaw and power saw blades was commenced. With the introduction of Bi-Metal bandsaw blading in 1985, the company was able to offer a locally produced range of blades to satisfy the diverse metal cutting needs of industry throughout the country.
In 1992 the company embarked on a major quality improvement program resulting in the SABS-ISO9001 Code of practice being awarded.
The company has subsequently been awarded the SABS-ISO 9005 and is continuously striving to maintain and enhance its quality control program.
In January 2003 First Cut (Pty) Ltd merged with Alexander and Poole (Pty) Ltd, the exclusive agent for the Starrett range of engineering products in South Africa. This completed what was effectively a vertical integration of the two company’s product ranges that resulted in the most comprehensive range of cutting consumables available in the South African market.
With effect from 1 January 2008, Bandsawing Services (Pty) Ltd. was incorporated into First Cut (Pty) Ltd. This merger brings a comprehensive capital equipment program to the group and a substantial investment has been made in creating a service division that enables us to support a range of machinery from entry level bandsaw and circular saw machines to state of the art CNC controlled drilling and cutting lines.
The company maintains close ties with international suppliers of cutting and engineering products, for both finished products and raw materials. Investment in quality enhancing products is continuous, resulting in manufactured products, which conform to the highest global standards.
More recently the company has undergone an intensive restructure in terms of identifying the range of products that it felt it wanted to focus on and specialise in. This has resulted in a far more streamlined and focused range of products designed around providing cutting solutions for various industries – the most important being steel, timber, meat, foam, textiles and the DIY trade.
