United Grinding unveils new machines, growth strategy

Studer launches the S131 and S151, a new grinding series.

At its annual Motion Meeting in Thun, United Grinding’s Studer brand CEO Fred Gaegauf unveiled several new products, and suggested that as many as six new platforms could be forthcoming during the year ahead.

Following the launch of the S141 cylindrical grinding machine in 2014, for the manufacture of spindle shafts, spindle casings rotor shafts and more, Studer is launching the S131 and S151, thus introducing a new grinding series.

The S131 is smaller than the S141, with a swing diameter over the table of 250mm and a maximum grinding length of 175mm for internal and 125mm for external grinding. It is available for workpieces with a maximum length of 300mm.

The S151, meanwhile, is larger than the S141, with a swing diameter over the table of 550 mm and a maximum grinding length of 400mm for internal and 150mm for external grinding. It is available for workpieces with a maximum length of 700mm.

Both new machines echo the popular ergonomics of the S141, with the same underlying technology. The S141 features two big sliding doors and is available in three different design sizes of 300 mm, 700mm and 1 300mm and inside diameters up to 250mm.

Its grinding spindle turret accommodates up to four grinding spindles, a universal measuring probe, and internal grinding quills in lengths up to 265mm. This allows both internal and external machining of work pieces in the same clamping, minimises non- cut times and boosts part accuracy.

Its work piece table automatically swivels from -10 to +20 degrees. Up to two pivoting dressing units for fixed or rotating dressing tools mount on the machine, and ensure the grinding wheels stay sharp throughout the machining operations to provide maximum performance and process stability.

Within United Grinding, Studer is part of the Cylindrical Grinding Group, along with the Schaudt and Mikrosa brands. Gaegauf said that the group is planning for high to moderate growth in the year ahead, with an expectation that United Grinding will take market share from competitors.
