TDC Cutting Tools expands its operations to South Africa

Company will initially concentrate on HSS twist drills.

TDC Cutting Tools Inc., one of the fastest growing cutting tool manufacturing companies in the world, and one of the world’s market leaders for high speed steel cutting tools has recently established a subsidiary in South Africa that is headed up by David Risk.

“With significant TDC manufacturing and sales volumes on every continent apart from Africa, a decision was taken to open a TDC subsidiary in South Africa. Its objective is to supply the African market with the Cleveland range of industrial cutting tool products, initially concentrating on the range of high speed steel twist drills that the company manufactures,” said Risk, who has extensive experience in marketing these products to the engineering fraternity, both locally and internationally.

“A stock hub has been established in Johannesburg, and TDC Cutting Tools South Africa (Pty) Ltd will import and distribute TDC’s industrial brand of cutting tools to the metal working industry locally. Products that will be available include HSS straight shank drills and HSS MTS drills, with other cutting tool product groups to be phased in.”

TDC is a global cutting tool organisation, established in 1995 by owner Jeff Chee, which today employs over 4 000 staff worldwide, spanning North and South America, Canada, Mexico, Europe and the Far East. The company is a manufacturer and exporter of fully ground straight/taper shank drills, hot roll forged drills and milled taper shank drills.

“TDC enjoys a 20% share of the global HSS cutting tool market – every one in five industrial grade HSS drills sold worldwide is manufactured in TDC’s cutting tool factories,” says Risk.

TDC is headquartered in Dalian, China, where in 2012 it built a state-of-the-art 250 000m² industrial park employing over 2 000 skilled cutting tool specialists. On this site, TDC’s numerous specialised cutting tool factories produce world class HSS and carbide drills, taps, end mills, saws of various types, steel coil and bar, coating plant, machine tools used in the manufacture of cutting tools, mining teeth and buttons, and grinding wheels, amongst other products.

“Part of the success of TDC has also been its focus on the successive acquisition of well-known international cutting tool manufacturing companies and brands such as Werko in Germany, Manigley in Switzerland and Greenfield Industries in North America. Through these successful acquisitions, TDC today owns 14 internationally recognised brands, including Cleveland, Chicago Latrobe, Vermont Tap & Die, Bassett, Cle-Line, Putnam Tools, H&G, Geometric, Vers-O-Tool, Acme-Fette, Werko, Manigley and Greenfield Industries,” said Charlie Lougasy, who is President and CEO of TDC Cutting Tools Inc. and is very well known in South Africa.

Every year, TDC achieves a production volume of 300 million pieces of cutting tools and 10 million metres of various bi-metal saws.

“One of the recent achievements of TDC has been the development of a carbide insert division, and the company has now started to manufacture carbide inserts that will shortly be released to the market.”

“Through this expansion, TDC has positioned itself for strong future growth in its overseas markets.”
