OPEN MIND will focus on turning, milling, and the importance of CAM software and MES in connected manufacturing environments at EMO 2023

New announcement for composites, honeycomb structures and foams.

OPEN MIND will focus on turning, milling, and the importance of CAM software and MES in connected manufacturing environments at EMO 2023. The CAD/CAM manufacturer is more than aware of the importance of the world’s leading trade fair for manufacturing technology, which is why this year’s booth, which is located in Exhibition Hall 9, Booth A05, has been upgraded to be larger and feature better media tech than ever before.

Live demonstrations on a GROB G350T mill-turn machine will be held at the booth to display what the milling-turning technologies of hyperMILL TURNING Solutions can do. The live demos will also include milling, drilling, and angle head support, as well as how to use a virtual machine to simulate machining of finished NC code. hyperMILL TURNING Solutions include technologies for turning, turn-milling, and mill-turning, meaning they can be used for all corresponding machine configurations. Last but not least, OPEN MIND’s demonstrations will also feature automation solutions to help make creating error-free NC programmes simpler and faster.

Connected manufacturing
OPEN MIND has been positioning hyperMILL as a vital building block in the digitalisation of process chains since the acquisition of MES manufacturer Hummingbird in early 2022. Connected manufacturing will also be on the agenda at EMO – under the motto “Create the future of manufacturing together” – to highlight the important role of the CAM system in a connected manufacturing environment.

OPEN MIND offers a precise, highly productive ultrasonic knife cutting strategy via its hyperMILLCAM software. Ultrasonic knife cutting represents an ideal solution for the efficient cutting of advanced materials including honeycomb structures, composites, and foams often found in aerospace, automotive and wind turbine applications. Using a single interface, users can benefit from the comprehensive programming capabilities of the hyperMILLCAD/CAM software suite ranging from 2.5D machining to 5-axis milling, as well as easily programme ultrasonic cutting with oscillating cutting blades.

hyperMILL provides NC code simulation to reliably bring challenging 6-axis output to the machine. Using hyperMILL’s VIRTUAL Machining Optimiser to control the orientation of the spindle, as the sixth axis, the cutting blade is aligned to the workpiece. The Optimiser keeps toolpaths within limits for demanding machining processes with limited rotation axes, such as a fork-head style milling machine (with the machine head having two rotary axes).

“Creating the required 6-axis NC programmes for knife cutting applications, including five machine axes plus a programmable spindle orientation, has historically proven to be a challenge,” said Alan Levine, Managing Director of OPEN MIND Technologies USA, Inc. “However, hyperMILL provides users with a productive, accurate, safe and smooth cutting solution which prevents hazardous rotations and retract movements.”
