New machines from Haas Automation

Haas has launched the new UMC-750SS universal machining center and the large through-bore ST-55 turning center that handles big jobs at the IMTS 2014 exhibition. The company has also announced that it has partnered with Scuderia Ferrari, the most successful team in the history of Formula One.

HSM enables five-axis simultaneous operations

Five-axis machining is an effective means to reduce setups and increase accuracy for multi-sided and complex parts. Machining those parts quickly further increases throughput and improves the bottom line.

Haas Automation’s UMC-750SS universal machining center enables high-speed five-sided (3+2) and simultaneous five-axis operations. The 40-taper machine features 762 x 508 x 508 mm XYZ travels, 30,5 mpm rapid traverse rates and an integrated, dual-axis trunnion table.

The high-speed, roller-cam trunnion table offers feed rates of 150 degrees/sec. to position parts at nearly any angle for 3+2 machining or simultaneous, five-axis contouring of complex parts. The table provides +110 and -35 degrees of tilt and 360 degrees of rotation for effective tool clearance and large part capacity, the company says. It measures 630 x 500 mm and has standard T-slots and a precision pilot bore for fixturing versatility.

The machine features a 15,000-rpm, inline direct-drive spindle and a high-speed 40+1 tool side-mounted tool changer. According to the company, the inline system couples the spindle directly to the motor for reduced heat, increased power transmission and improved surface finishes. The spindle is powered by a 23kW vector drive system yielding 90 foot-pounds of torque.

To simplify job setup, the machine features dynamic work offsets and tool center point control. The machine also comes standard with the company’s high-speed machining software and Wireless Intuitive Probing system. Additional options include a belt-type chip conveyor, high-pressure, through-spindle coolant system, and expanded program memory.

Large through-bore turning center handles big jobs
Big parts are big business. And today’s shops need large-capacity machines to handle the big jobs commonly found in such industries as oil & gas exploration, alternative energy, mining, and aerospace.

The ST-55 turning center from Haas Automation features twin-chuck capabilities, a high-torque spindle and a 318 mm diameter through-bore. The turning center is well-suited for machining heavy pipes and fittings, large couplers and long rollers, the company says.

The turning center has a maximum cutting capacity of 648 x 2 032 mm, with swings of 876 mm over the front apron and 648 mm over the cross-slide. A servo-driven tailstock (MT5 taper) is standard, and a rest provision is available for supporting long shafts.

A 41kW vector dual-drive unit powers the spindle through a two-speed gearbox to provide 2 847 Nm of torque in low gear. High gear supports a spindle speed of 1 000 rpm. Both front and rear A1-20 spindle noses accept a variety of aftermarket large-diameter manual and pneumatic chucks, and a heavy sheet metal enclosure provides protection from chips and coolant during machining.

The machine is equipped with a hydraulically clamped, 12-station, bolt-on-style tool turret that accepts 184 mm split boring bar holders, as well as BOT toolholders. An optional hybrid BOT/VDI turret is available. Standard equipment includes rigid tapping, a color remote jog handle, a 15″ color LCD monitor and built-in USB connectivity. High-productivity options include a belt-type chip conveyor, high-torque live tooling with C axis and high-pressure coolant systems.

The rear chuck area is also fully enclosed during machining, but a wide sliding door and swinging end panel provide complete access from the front and top, simplifying chuck installation and adjustment, and making it easy to load pipe using an overhead crane. Unlike some competing machines, it’s not necessary to remove sheet metal panels or modify the enclosure to handle drill pipe.

The turning center is designed for jobs common in oilfield work. Haas’s Intuitive Programming System features built-in threading and rethreading cycles for both straight and tapered threads.

Partners with Scuderia Ferrari
Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool builder in North America, has partnered with Scuderia Ferrari, the most successful team in the history of Formula One. Beginning with the 65th British Grand Prix held recently at Silverstone, UK Haas Automation was featured on the lower sidepods of the Ferrari F14 T piloted by championship-winning drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen. Haas Automation branding will be seen on the cars for the remainder of the 2014 Formula One season and throughout the 2015 season.

“Haas Automation is a premium brand, and there’s no better way to drive that point home than to connect it with Scuderia Ferrari on motor racing’s biggest stage,” said Gene Haas, founder of Haas Automation.

“Scuderia Ferrari is F1’s most prestigious and decorated team with a large, loyal and passionate fan base. Exposing Scuderia Ferrari fans and Ferrari customers to the quality of Haas Automation CNC machine tools is an important first step to expanding our global reach.”

Scuderia Ferrari took its first Formula One victory in 1951 at Silverstone and currently has 221 race victories, with 16 constructors titles and 15 driver championships. Two-time F1 World Champion Alonso and 2007 F1 World Champion Räikkönen comprise Scuderia Ferrari’s driver lineup, with the duo combining for 52 F1 victories (32 for Alonso and 20 for Räikkönen).

“We are pleased to welcome Haas Automation as our newest official supplier,” said Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Marco Mattiacci.

“This agreement strengthens our existing connections with the USA, an important market not only for our company, but also for Scuderia Ferrari, as it is one where the team already benefits from several important partnerships.

“Over the past few months, we have been exploring with Haas a number of potential areas of collaboration, and this agreement is an immediate opportunity that we are pursuing, which proves Haas’ interest in Formula One. This collaboration will enable Haas Automation to reinforce its brand awareness and promote its products and services around the world, thanks to the appeal of Scuderia Ferrari and the global reach of Formula One. We are therefore delighted to make this announcement, which sees another premium brand join our portfolio of partners. In parallel, but as a separate project, Haas is committed to entering Formula One with its own team, a testimony to the growing appeal of our sport in the USA and on this front, technical discussions are ongoing between us.”

Haas Automation’s partnership with Scuderia Ferrari also allows the company to become engaged in the business of Formula One before becoming a primary sponsor of Gene Haas’ planned Formula One team. Haas’ team will debut in 2016, where it will become the first American-based F1 team since 1986.
