Recently the demand for automation systems for small, complex workpieces, such as those found in the medical equipment and aerospace industries, for the production of a wide variety of parts in small lot sizes is increasing. Yamazaki Mazak has developed the Variaxis i-300 AWC in response to this increasing demand based on Mazak FMS production expertise accumulated over many years.
Designed for automated small- to medium-size part processing operations, the VMC is suitable for machining aluminium and other non-ferrous metals.
The VARIAXIS i-300 AWC (Auto Work Changer), a compact 5-axis automation cell developed for high mix, low volume production
It comes standard with a multiple drum tool storage system that holds up to 145 tools, and the AWC with 32 positions accommodates workpieces up to 350mm x 315mm and weighing up to 62 kilograms.
If production needs increase, shops can expand the AWC and tool storage capacities to 40 workpieces and 505 tools (in increments of 60 tools), respectively.
The VMC has a standard 12 000rpm spindle (with up to 30 000rpm available), and its integral spindle/motor design and temperature-controlled coolant help enable vibration-free, high-speed operation. The machine’s trunnion-style rotary table creates high rigidity and accuracy in the A and C axes, while its compact spindle cartridge, cam-driven tool changer, ball screw core cooling, and MX hybrid roller guide system all contribute to operator ease of use and machining precision, the company states.
The machine features the Mazatrol SmoothX CNC.
