Condere Laser and Engineering broadens its horizons and expands to new facility

The company has doubled its manufacturing space and purchased a Trumpf 1030 fiber laser and a JFY TPM8 150 press brake.

For many years Condere Laser and Engineering has operated from a facility in Bredell, Kempton Park, Gauteng that initially was a ‘garage’ type situation on a farm plot. Through alterations and additions, it grew into a 1 500m² under roof work area comprising a number of work spaces that limited movement of material, product and people. However, with the addition of new equipment and the expansion of the business, the company had to make decisions and has now moved to the industrial area in Pomona, Kempton Park.

The new facility has 3 300m² under roof. An added bonus is that the facility, besides being all under one roof, has an open floor space with no restrictions to flow. This has allowed the company to maximise its efficiencies in receiving and flow of material through the processing departments to assembly, packaging and despatch.

The new Trumpf 1030 fiber laser has a 6kW source with a bed size of 3 000mm by 1 500mm. It has also been supplied with a new MSS Nitrocube system by Retecon

Another bonus is the factory has frontage to the busy R21 highway, a main link between the OR Tambo International airport and all the surrounding industrial areas to Pretoria. A large outdoor advertising sign was one of the first tasks taken care of and this has started to realise results.

“I was once told that a business with no sign is a sign of no business. This not exactly true because where we were previously, we had no signage and still grew. But we are now realising that it pays to advertise and be seen. There have been developments in the company with the purchase of a Trumpf 1030 fiber laser and a JFY TPM8 150 press brake. And prior to the move we purchased a DN Solutions CNC milling machine and a DN Solutions CNC lathe, supplied by Puma Machine Tools, in 2023,” said Greg Barnard, who took over the running of the business from his father in 2011.

“A year and half before that we purchased the DNE 6kW fiber laser with a work area of 4m x 2m and a 150 ton and 50 ton press brake, both from Bystronic.”

The MSS Nitrocube system

“We now have a decent selection of quality equipment at our disposal and excess capacity that we need to fill.”

“The company has grown in significant numbers over the last couple of years. We have always been active in trying to expand the business. We essentially mainly manufacture components and systems used for vehicle fire suppression for the mining industry. These can include various pressure vessels and nozzles, but we do everything from top to bottom for these products. We don’t do the installations of these products, but for example, one of our biggest clients who we supply, does these kinds of specialised installations,” explained Barnard.

“With the introduction of the lasers and press brakes we are more than a jobbing shop or service centre. The machining department provides CNC machining in the form of turning, milling and drilling.”

“Manufacturing precision components for the fire engineering and fire suppression industry requires the best equipment and machinery not only to simply produce these components but because you are dealing with life and death situations. Often this equipment is needed in far off places and even underground where help is a long way away. You simply cannot afford for your equipment to fail when it is needed and it needs to be manufactured to the highest of safety standards.”

The new JFY TPM8 150 press brake was installed in January this year. The machine has a bending width of 3 100mm and a bending force of 150 tons. The machine was supplied and installed by Puma Machine Tools

“The Trumpf 1030 fiber laser has a 6kW source with a bed size of 3 000mm by 1 500mm. It has also been supplied with a new MSS Nitrocube system by Retecon and they were installed in November 2024 just before we moved the whole company.”

“The system provides high-pressure nitrogen at 99.9975% purity, as required for high-quality laser cutting, especially of stainless steel. The new system, which is also very compact, features integrated high-pressure storage tanks together and MSS’s own touch-screen control panel. It is also particularly efficient, using 25% to 40% less energy than previous systems and producing nitrogen of a higher purity. Using Nitrogen to cut in a fiber situation is very popular these days.”

“Soon to be installed is a powder coating plant. This will allow us to provide our customers with a complete turnkey solution.”

“We are already SABS 1739-2013 approved for our range of pressure vessels, and manufacture various other pressure vessels as well as storage tanks for various industries. We are now implementing ISO 9001:2015, ISO 3833 and AS 5062 and are on the verge of accreditation.”

“What is AS-5062? AS-5062 is the Australian standard for fire protection for mobile and transportable equipment, the object of this standard is to formalise good practice in reducing the incidence and severity of fires in order to safeguard life, property and the environment.”

“Our passion for precision, unwavering commitment to quality, and dedication to exceptional service have established us as a trusted partner in the industry.”
