Gauteng based Combination Products has recently signed an agreement to represent Shandong Deed Precision Machine Tool, a Chinese manufacturer of CNC machine tools, in South Africa.
“We already have one machine operating at a company based in Lanseria, and the owner is very happy with the performance of the machine. The company manufactures injection mould products and they have a toolroom to manufacture their own moulds,” said Iain Liddel, who heads up Combination Products.
“The products that we have been offering to the metalworking market since the company was established in 1989 have been focused around tooling, grinding, workholding, measuring and other machine related accessories and equipment. We found that we were getting more and more enquiries for us to source CNC machines and our research showed that Shandong Deed Precision Machine Tool had built up a reputation of manufacturing machines that are reliable, offer precision and stability and are affordable.”
Machine bases and columns are cast in UHPC (Ultra high-performance concrete) for better vibration absorption
One of the features of the product range is that all of Shandong Deed Precision Machine Tool’s machine bases and columns are cast in UHPC (Ultra high-performance concrete).

“UHPC is a cementitious composite material composed of an optimised gradation of granular constituents, a water-to-cementitious materials ratio less than 0.25, and a high percentage of discontinuous internal fibre reinforcement.”
“UHPC is a new class of concrete that has been developed in recent decades for its exceptional properties of strength and durability. This high-performance concrete can be utilised in structural rehabilitation and accelerated bridge construction in addition to several other applications.”

Strength
UHPC has a compressive strength 10 times that of traditional concrete. Compressive strength is the ability of a material to resist bending under a load (or in compression). Normal concrete used in bridges has a compressive strength of 3 000 to 5 000 psi. UHPC has a compressive strength of 18 000 to 35 000psi. Another measure of strength is tensile strength or tension is how strong a material is when you pull it. While traditional concrete has a tensile strength of 400 to 700 psi, UHPC has a tensile strength of about 1 400 psi.

Excellent thermal stability
“The thermal conductivity of UHPC mineral casting is 1/20 of that of iron casting, the specific heat capacity is 2.1 times that of iron casting. Excellent thermal stability and thermal inertia can effectively control any kind of machine deformation caused by temperature change, thus the stability of machine precision is further guaranteed.”
High rigidity
The moving parts are welded by high-strength low-alloy steel, the material elasticity modulus is around 1.4 times that of iron casting so that overall rigidity can be improved by more than 30%.”
Lighter weight
“Compared to iron casting, the lighter-weight structure can reduce unit weight by 20% to 30%, effectively reduce the inertia of moving parts and increase the dynamic response by 10 to 20%.”
Better vibration absorption
“The vibration absorption of UHPC mineral casting is 10 times better than iron casting. Under a large dynamic load, the stability of machine precision can be guaranteed, while the surface finish quality of the workpiece can also be improved by 20%.”
“For the current manufacture of the company, all machine bases and columns are cast by UHPC strictly according to German casting standards.”
