Celebrating the life of PJ Hattingh

It is with deep regret, sadness, and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter-John Hattingh, fondly known to family, friends, and those in the engineering industry as PJ, on 31 May 2025.

PJ was born in Ladysmith. His journey was defined by an unwavering dedication to precision, a vibrant zest for life, and a commitment that touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. From an early age, PJ displayed a natural aptitude for engineering. He attended Ladysmith High School, completing matric in 1978.

He went on to qualify as a millwright—a rigorous trade that laid the foundation for his remarkable career. This training instilled in him a meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of metalworking that became the hallmark of his professional life.

PJ began his career in the machine tool industry as a salesperson for Drury Redman in KwaZulu-Natal. After gaining valuable experience, he followed his entrepreneurial instincts and, in 1993, established PJ Machine Tools (PJMT).

The company focused on selling equipment, tooling, and accessories to the metalworking industry. PJ proudly represented international brands that included Kyocera Cutting Tools, Johnford VMCs, Goodway CNC turning centers, Equiptop grinders, and Mega bandsaw, all brands that are imported by Skok Machine Tools.

Under his leadership, PJMT became a respected and trusted name in the sector—synonymous with quality, reliability, and service.

“For many years, PJMT was not just a client, but a true partner to Skok Machine Tools. Our relationship with PJ transcended business. It was built on mutual respect, shared challenges, and countless successes. PJ was a pillar of the KZN manufacturing industry, a valued partner, and a dear friend.”

“He was more than a business owner. He was a collaborative force, always ready to lend an ear, offer advice, or share a laugh. His integrity and straightforward manner made every deal a pleasure and every conversation enriching. PJ understood the value of a handshake and the importance of lasting relationships.”

“Peter-John Hattingh leaves behind a legacy not only of business success but of genuine camaraderie and lasting friendship. His presence will be deeply missed by all of us at Skok Machine Tools and across the broader industry. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Thank you, PJ, for the years of partnership, the invaluable friendship, and the enduring inspiration. You will be remembered.”

Outside of work, PJ enjoyed a game of golf and was passionate about motorcycles, racing, nature, and engineering.

PJ is survived by his daughter, his adopted son, and two sisters. He will be deeply missed by his family, former colleagues across South Africa, lifelong friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace PJ.
