Adapting to changing times in the metal service industry: SPP Profiling’s strategic growth takes hold

Based in Paarl in the Western Cape, SPP Profiling is cutting out a niche position for itself as the go-to precision engineering shop ready to take advantage of future industry growth opportunities in the greater Western Cape.

“The metal service industry is evolving, with many companies finding it crucial to offer turnkey solutions and to continually improve their customer service to remain competitive. SPP Profiling, established in March 2021 in Bellville, Cape Town, recognised these changes early on,” says SPP Profiling’s Sales Director, Jonathan Romeo.

“After we had done some careful market analysis, we identified the need to adapt our approach and move closer to our existing customers through opening SPP Profiling in Paarl. SPP Profiling is part of Stainless Plate Products – the founding business of the associated business units and branches and the starting point of our brand SPP.”

“In March 2023, SPP Profiling opened our new facility in the heart of the Winelands, Paarl, and by May of the same year, our Paarl facility began processing its first laser-cut orders.”

“Since then, SPP Profiling Paarl has rapidly become a benchmark of precision metalworking in the Paarl/Wellington area and the broader Boland region. Our mission is to provide unparalleled stainless steel and aluminium laser cutting, bending, and brushing services with the fastest lead times, setting new standards for quality and efficiency in the industry.”

“Paarl is renowned for its strong community and vibrant business environment, particularly in the agriculture, food and beverage, packaging, and luxury outdoor living industries like off-road camping caravans. While these industries differ, they share a common demand for excellent service, high quality, and fair pricing.”

SPP Profiling services amongst others the fruit packaging industry, the agriculture industry, the wine processing industry, does general engineering, services the outdoor camping industry, as well as the more specialised off-road camping trailer and 4×4 caravan industries

“Our 2 000m2 facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, reflecting our commitment to excellence. We operate a 6kW Bystronic fibre laser with a large format 6 000mm x 2 000mm bed and a 3kW Trumpf fibre laser with a 3 000mm x 1 500mm bed,” explains Ruan Lourens, SPP Profiling’s Operations Manager.

“These machines enable us to deliver precise and efficient laser cutting for a wide range of applications. Our advanced bending capabilities are supported by three Bystronic bending machines, including the Bystronic Xpert Pro range, which can handle bending lengths up to 4 000mm with remarkable accuracy. They include a 250 ton machine, a 150 ton machine and an 80 ton machine.”

“In addition to cutting and bending, our Timesavers brushing and deburring machine is integral to our production process. Capable of accommodating part widths up to 1 600mm and performing edge rounding up to 2mm, this machine ensures a superior finish on stainless steel components, aligning with our dedication to high-quality output.”

“To stay competitive, our business vision must always align with our customers’ needs and aspirations. We began 2023 with a modest team of five employees, and have since expanded to 13 employees, introducing a night shift to meet growing demand. This growth underscores the strong market need for our capabilities in the Paarl/Wellington area and surrounding regions,” says Lourens.

“To further enhance our production capacity, we plan to add another CNC bending machine and a plate rolling facility soon, significantly boosting our capabilities and expanding our service offerings.
Our strategic investments in cutting-edge technology and comprehensive staff training highlights our commitment to becoming the leading service centre in the Boland area,” continued Romeo.

“The past year has shown a clear demand for our high-quality services, and we are poised to meet this demand with a continued focus on precision and efficiency, as well as exceptional service delivery. At SPP Profiling Paarl, we are not just growing – we believe we are setting the pace for the industry.”

“Our goal is to be recognised as the best in class when it comes to laser cutting and bending. Using this strategy has shown us that there is further room for us to grow as a company and we are continuously looking at ways that we can better service our clients, and the whole metalworking industry in the Western Cape as a whole,” notes Romeo.

Freddie Visser, Stainless Plate Products’ owner says: “We have invested very aggressively over the last few years and by doing so, that is automatically investing into the industry. We focus on servicing our customers to the best of our ability – that is one of our key strengths.”

“We believe that if we do that right then we have a business case. And if we are able to maintain the flow of work through our facility then that will allow us ultimately to grow. This whole area is known for sheet metal, many of these companies have been here long before us.”

“We came here to service our current customers in a better manner and automatically that has allowed us to grow within the industry this side as well.”

“Of course, this new facility has also allowed us to improve our lead times as well with the kind of equipment we have invested in, but another advantage of having other facilities is that if you run out of capacity at one site, you’ve got other entities that help you with the overflow.”

“It’s interesting, I think the market looks at this kind of equipment and they say it’s very expensive equipment, but they don’t understand the benefits that you get from this equipment. But I promise you, we can bend and cut significantly more efficiently than anybody else with more basic equipment.”

“Your payback on this investment is really quick because your production volumes are so much more. And then your quality is so much better. My guys here don’t need any laser angle monitoring on the machines. You don’t really need that in my opinion. They trust the machine. They’ll measure the first bend, they’ll do the correction if needed, and then from there, the machine takes care of it.”

“Because of the quality of the equipment, you can trust that the machine will give you the end product continuously, at the same quality,” concludes Visser.
