WD Hearn Machine Tools was established in 1937 by, Brigadier W.D Hearn, as a general engineering equipment importer and distributor. In 1985 there was a management buyout when current owner and Managing Director Ray Cooper and three colleagues, who have since left the company, purchased the business from Rutherfords, who had owned the business since 1969. That same year (1985) WD Hearn sold their first CNC machine and in 1987 the company sold its first Leadwell CNC machining centre and have since installed over 1000 machines countrywide.
The company has now built a strong reputation throughout the South African engineering sector by placing emphasis on finding solutions to meet customers’ needs by offering the best precision equipment available. The company specialises in importing, installation and commissioning of precision metal cutting and metal removal equipment from well-known manufacturers around the world. Strong emphasis is placed on after sales service and with a network of highly skilled engineers situated strategically around the country.
WD Hearn is a specialist CNC machine tool dealer offering equipment from 2-axis lathes to complex 24-axis multi spindles, as well as 5-axis machines. Products include machining centres (vertical and horizontal), turning centres (lathes and vertical), large bridge type machines, boring mills, waterjet, fully automated band saws, surface and cylindrical grinders, radial drills, EDM and WEDM, routers and gear hobbing.
Additionally WD Hearn supplies a range of measuring equipment, engineering accessories, woodworking machines, tooling and other accessories. These include rotary tables, measuring arms and other metrology equipment, laser mould repair equipment, conventional equipment and bar feeders. The company also offers a turnkey project and CNC retrofit service and training.
WD Hearn has offices in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban and Johannesburg. The company represents Siemens, Nikon Metrology, MAG USA, FFG Group (Rambaudi, Jobs, Sigma, Hessapp, Huller, Boeringer), Flow Waterjet, Leadwell, Mitsubishi EDM, Jones and Shipman, Starrett, Renishaw and Sanco. More recently the company has been appointed to represent the Swiss manufacturer of high-end CNC equipment Tornos and Japanese manufacturer Kitamura.
WD Hearn has supplied equipment into many South African manufacturing companies, from leading job shops to large OEMS, in the mining, automotive, general engineering and aerospace industries. These include Ford Motor Company South Africa, Transnet, VWSA, Mercedes Benz SA and Bell Equipment.
