As the largest CNC machine tool builder in the western world, Haas Automation manufactures a comprehensive line of CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers, lathes and turning centers, rotary products and indexers, as well as a number of large five-axis and specialty machines including mould making machining centers, toolroom machines and gantry routers.
The company, which was established in 1983 when it started manufacturing collet indexers, introduced its first machine tool in 1988, and in the process created a new, lower price tier for vertical machining centers with its VF-1 model. Since then, Haas has continued to introduce new machine models at a remarkable pace, all of which follow the company’s low cost, high reliability model.
When the company began building CNC vertical machining centers, most analysts in the United States said that making commodity machine tools in the United States was pointless in the face of surging low-priced imports. Gene Haas, company founder, owner and president, did not believe this. His original methods for building machine tools focused on competitive pricing and quality, and the company has kept that focus ever since.
Haas has since risen to become America’s largest unit volume producer of machine tools and the company’s facility in Oxnard, California is the largest, most modern machine tool manufacturing operations in the United States.
Haas Factory Outlets
Products are distributed worldwide through a network of Haas Factory Outlets (HFOs), independently owned franchised local businesses.
Haas Factory Outlet in South Africa forms part of this worldwide network and can rely on technical and sales support directly from the factory at any given time. The HFO concept is effectively the language and approach of the retail sector brought to machine tool supply. Many suppliers talk about customer service these days, but it can be no surprise that it is an American company that is taking this to the limit. The HFO concept was coined in 1999 and has since been rolled out the concept in 50 countries worldwide and now includes 170 HFO outlets.
Haas machines were first imported into South Africa in the 1990s. Haas CNC Services South Africa was established in 1998 importing CNC machines from Haas Automation Inc. and shortly thereafter joined the HFO network in XXXX.
Haas also has a presence in motorsports, having founded NASCAR team Haas CNC Racing, now known as Stewart-Haas Racing. The team is co-owned by three-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart and Haas Automation founder Gene Haas. It was founded in 2002 as Haas CNC Racing.
The company also formed a Formula One team and participated in the F1 series for the first time in 2016. Previous involvement in Formula One and still is the case today is supplying teams such as Ferrari with machines and technical support.
